Update: Johnes Disease Epidemic

Jan 29 2009 7:09PM
KXMBTV Bismarck

It's a disease that has threatened heards across the state...

And Johne's disease could kill more cattle unless they are tested and vaccinated for it.

Kristi Doll told legisaltors how Johne's affected their New Salem herd. They had 30 cows test positive for the disease she says the family thought the disease would wipe out their entire herd.

But then they learned they could vaccinate against it.

She's urging legislators to approve funding to help pay for the testing to control the disease and vaccinations....

(Kristi Doll / Dairy Rancher) if North Dakota is going to stay important with Agriculture and if the beef and dairy is going to stay important in ND, then we need to keep testing for this disease. Should there ever become a point in time when Johne's disease is linked to a human health concern, we're going to experience mad cow again."

The Senate Agriculture Committee approved the bill, it now goes to the Senate Appropriations committee. watch the video | save this article / add to your favorites list
